HDD has evolved into the preferred method for installing underground pipelines, service conduit and other utilities through trenchless methods. The reason being is that is has a minimal footprint on the surface and eliminates both digging and trenching along with reducing the impact of traffic disruption. Another benefit to HDD is that is has an environmental impact reduction and reduces costs.
HDD is a technique in which a tunnel is bored out underground and a pipeline or other utility is pulled through the drilled underground tunnel. There is an entry point where the HDD drill bores a horizontal hole underground with a steerable, trackable drill head and resurfaces at the exit point. With highly trained technicians and technology, the technician is able to bore out the hole ensuring accuracy in angle and depth to adhere to engineered plans.
During the drilling process, the bore is kept open and lubricated by circulating a mixture of water an bentonite clay which is a non toxic substance and safe on the environment. Once the drill makes it to the exit point, a swivel is added to the drill head to pull back whatever is needed to be pulled through the conduit to complete the process.
HDD is a quicker way to install conduit rather than trenching and digging. There is minimal to no traffic disruption and there is no need to backfill or patch concrete or roadways.
